To begin, in the back left corner, we see several books on databases: a couple on dBASE III Plus (the first database management system to become popular), another on Microsoft Access, and another on the SQL query language.

We also have several books and CD-ROMs related to the Microsoft Office suite, including the aforementioned Access book, as well as one specifically on Word, another on FrontPage, and others covering the rest of the applications in the suite, such as Excel, Visio, etc. As a competitor to the Word word processor, we have two books on WordPerfect. As a competitor to Excel spreadsheets, we have a book on Lotus 1-2-3. Similarly, we have a book on the IBM Assistant suite (the orange book on the right), which unsuccessfully attempted to replace Microsoft Office.

At the back on the right, we have a small corner dedicated to computer security with 3 examples of antivirus programs: Panda, Kaspersky and McAfee.

In the foreground, on the left, we also have a CD-ROM of Microsoft’s Encarta multimedia encyclopedia (1998), which was the most popular and widespread until the arrival of Wikipedia in 2001.

With the second shelf from the top, we want to pay homage to PC game designers, especially those from the golden age when games were released in eye-catching illustrated boxes. For example, on the left, we find the fifth graphic adventure in the “King’s Quest” series, created by developer Roberta Williams (1991). In the centre, at the back, we display the box for “Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis” (1992), the sequel to “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” (1990), which is available in our Museum’s collection but not on display. We can also see two flight simulators: “Falcon 4.0” (1998) and “Microsoft Flight Simulator” (1999). On the right, you can see the collector’s edition box for the “Dragon’s Lair” PC trilogy (2001), of which we also have a cassette version for Amstrad computers released in 1986 (not on display). Also visible on the right is the beautiful box for the game “World of Warcraft – Battle chest” (2008).

In the foreground of this shelf, we can highlight other games, such as “Assassin’s Creed II” (2009), belonging to one of Ubisoft’s most famous franchises. We also have a greatest hits collection from the now-defunct Novalogic, responsible for the “Comanche,” “F-22,” and “Armored Fist” series, among others. There’s also a PC version of the legendary “Prince of Persia” (2008) and a copy of “SimCity 3000” (1999), among other games.

The third shelf from the top houses various books and applications related to programming languages. In the back left corner, we find issue number 1 of the “BASIC Encyclopedia of Computing, Minicomputers, and Personal Computers” (1985), as well as several books on “classic” languages such as Pascal, Fortran, Cobol, Modula-2, and assembly, and more recent ones like Java. Next to the encyclopedia are two versions of the Microsoft Visual Studio development program (2005 and 2013). In the centre-right of the shelf are a book and a Delphi development environment, from 1997 and 1999, respectively.

In the right corner we find the collection of books on Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 (1999), as well as a manual on professional programming in C (1989), which comes with a 5 1/4″ floppy disk as a complement.

To finish this shelf, we show a book on computer project management (Pham Thu Quang and Jean-Jacques Gonin, 1994) and another on software engineering (Roger S. Pressman, 1993).

The second shelf from the bottom is dedicated to operating systems.
